ANGLING
An extraordinary example of the voracity of a trout was witnessed the other day by Charles Dicks, Esq., of Wilsonhurst, while fishing (by permission of
Sir Spencer Maryon Wilson, Bart.) at Moyces Pond with artificial minnow.
While in the act of drawing out for a fresh cast, a trout sprang at the bait, jumping clean over the brick wall on to the bank, to the mutual surprise of angler and fish. It proved to be a Lochleven trout weighing 11lb.
FIFE AND DRUM BAND
A gratifying sequel to the successful concert held at the National Schools in this village, on May 4th, was witnessed on Saturday last, at the above schools, when some 40 boys assembled seeking enrolment in the new corps, which has assumed the title of the “Fletching Fife and Drum Band.”
The idea of its re-establishment is due to Sir Spencer Maryon Maryon Wilson, Bart, who takes great interest in the promotion of any useful scheme in the village, and who has prevailed on Mrs. O. Ruck-Keene to take up the general management and superintendence.
This lady has taken up the cause with such energy and zeal that she has already enlisted much influential support, amongst the first to promise aid being the Right Hon. the Earl of Sheffield. Mr. M. L. Landfried bandmaster, of Brighton, has been engaged as instructor. Mr. Landfried was formerly in the 17th Lancers, and was bugler in the charge of Balaclava, and rode with the “Gallant Six Hundred.” Mr. Hare, of Newick, has also promised his help and experience.
The instruments, which were brought by subscription for the original band, have been handed over to Mrs. O. Ruck-Keene by the Vicar (Rev. W. F. Attenborough), and, judging from the highly-successful start made on Saturday, the undertaking promises to be a popular one.
